Castle Boys Fight Over Cash

The Boys employed by the Presidency to counter the pressure group, Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), under the name, Alliance for Responsible Opposition A(FRO) are allegedly fighting among themselves over cash. AFRO, which was formed barely a month ago by elements of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) with support from the National Security Co-ordinator, Lt. Col. Larry Gbevlo-Lartey (rtd) and other NDC chieftains, is already throwing punches, with a statement dismissing their leader, Benjamin Akyena Brantuo, former Junior Common Room President of the Commonwealth Hall, University of Ghana. The members met at Paloma Hotel last night to endorse the decision by the AFRO leadership to expel the Castle boy. Some members of the group have dismissed the Castle boy who prides himself as the convener and chairman of the AFRO because of some cash allegedly released by Gbevlo-Lartey for their recent outreach programme at the Teachers Hall in Accra, where they attacked the opposition. Akyena stands accused by his colleagues including Lord Koranteng Hammah, AFRO Co-ordinator, and Fortunate Anuga, AFRO Press Secretary, for using the name of the group to solicit funds and using them for his personal gains.AFRO has put a disclaimer on Akyena Brantuo, asking all media houses and the general public to desist from dealing with him in the name of the group. Apart from that, the group said Akyena had persistently not been able to espouse the core ideals, doctrine, philosophy and sacred principles of AFRO and indeed, your (Akyena’s) appearances on several media stations have been a source of worry to members since your arguments are usually not in consonance with our avowed aims and objectives.” They made specific reference to what they said was his ‘abysmal performance’ on Adom FM, where he was reported to have addressed listeners as ‘fellow NDC supporters’ at a time he was supposed to be on a platform of AFRO.They also accused the Castle boy of grammatical inexactitudes, inelegance of speech and downright inability to express himself with flawless eloquence which, according to them was steadily blotting the reputation of the group since the flaws “countenance mediocrity.” AFRO said it had come to its notice that Akyena was making desperate attempts to create the erroneous impression in the public’s eye that AFRO was his personal creation. They noted that he had variously bestowed on himself titles such as chairman, leader and even founder to the chagrin of the entire membership of the group, stressing that “all these positions are non-existent in our constitution.” The group said Akyena had never contributed financially or intellectually towards the success of any of its programmes, apart from appending his signature to statements issued by AFRO, thereby referring to him as a ‘white elephant’. The group has appointed Bernard Brock Nii Aku Yartey, a man described as a businessman and a philanthropist, to act in his stead as the convener of AFRO with immediate effect whilst Akyena has been asked to hand over all assets of AFRO at his disposal to the National Secretariat immediately. Akyena said he would respond to the issue appropriately when he was contacted by Daily Guide on Friday.It is not too clear whether the confusion in AFRO has anything to do with a text message making the rounds in sections of the media, purported to have been sent by a certain James who is suspected to be a deputy Minister. The said text message, which is branded ‘private and confidential’ states, “Yesterday’s meeting did not go the way Prof wanted us to conduct these meetings, if der is a new face around, we must be notified. Konadu has Jerry’s network dat gathers gud intelligence. I don’t trust some of these hungry CPP guys we are using to form this AFRO pressure group! I am tracing one of them to someone around Konadu and this is dangerous.” The message continued. “If the primary goal of this group is to scatter Konadu’s ambition as uncle Ato (Ato Ahwoi) wants indicated, we can’t afford any scandalous leaks, the Bempah and Dela boys have the media, and Jerry’s commandos sniffing around for them. We must double check on of the CPP guys we programmed has links with Nduom because NPP will know. See you at castle meeting morrow. Watch your back esp these stupid foot soldiers. James”. Though Daily Guide has made several attempts to speak to James to ascertain whether or not the text emanated from him, he has continuously failed to answer his phone.

AG suffers another defeat

The Attorney General has suffered another major defeat at the nation’s law courts.

The latest trouncing of the Attorney General was over the case in which two former top officials of the Ministry of Youth and Sports went to court to challenge their interdiction by the Civil Service for their alleged roles in the infamous Muntaka corruption scandal.

The Civil Service’s action was on grounds that Mr. Albert Ampong, a former Chief Director of the Sports Ministry, and Mr. Adim Odoom, former Chief Accountant of the same Ministry were interfering in ongoing investigations into allegations of financial impropriety against them.

But, in a landmark ruling delivered by the Human Rights Court this morning, trial Judge, Justice Paul Derry, quashed the interdiction of the two men and ordered the Civil Service to immediately reinstate them to their respective positions.

Since the scandal, Mr Ampong and Mr Odoom have been transferred from the Sports Ministry to the office of the head of Civil Service. Mr Dame told CitiNews he intends to immediately serve the notice of entry of judgment on the Attorney General to advice the Civil Service Council to take the necessary steps to reinstate his clients.

Mr Dame told CitiNews he has not yet gotten any indication that the Attorney General intends to appeal today’s court ruling.

Laptop use on laps might reduce sperm quality: report

Using a laptop computer as the name suggests may not be good for male reproductive health, according to a study.

And there is little that can be done about it, aside from using the laptop on a desk, said Yelim Sheynkin, a urologist at the State University of New York at Stony Brook who led the study published in Fertility and Sterility.

In the study, thermometers were used to measure the temperature of the scrotums of 29 young men balancing a laptop on their knees. Even with a lap pad under the computer, the men's scrotums overheated quickly.

"Millions and millions of men are using laptops now, especially those in the reproductive age range," said Sheynkin.

"Within 10 or 15 minutes their scrotal temperature is already above what we consider safe, but they don't feel it."

According to the American Urological Association, nearly one in six couples in the United States has trouble conceiving. About half the time, this is due to male infertility.

Under normal circumstances, the position of the testicles outside the body keeps them a few degrees cooler than the inside of the body, which is necessary for sperm production.

No studies have yet researched how laptops affect male fertility and there is no strong evidence that it would, Sheynkin added. But earlier research has showed that warming the scrotum even more than one degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit) is enough to damage sperm.

Though both general health and lifestyle factors such as nutrition and drug use can affect reproductive health, tight jeans and briefs are generally not considered a risk factor since people are moving around.

Holding a laptop on the knees, though, requires keeping the legs still and closed. After one hour in this position, the researchers found that the men's testicle temperature had risen by up to 2.5 C.

A lap pad kept the computer cool and meant that less heat was transmitted to the skin, but Sheynkin warned it didn't do much to cool the testicles and might give a false sense of security.

"I wouldn't say that if someone starts to use laptops they will become infertile," Sheynkin told Reuters Health, though he warned that frequent use might contribute to reproductive problems because "the scrotum doesn't have time to cool down."

When the men sat with their legs spread wide -- made possible only by placing the computer on a large lap pad -- they could keep their testicles cooler. But it still took less than 30 minutes before they began overheating.

"No matter what you do, even with the legs spread wide apart, the temperature is still going to be higher than what we call safe," said Sheynkin.

This is what a bunch of disrespectful ingrates that calls themselves Friends of Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings(FONKAR) told the Vice President of Ghana

The Friends of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings ( FONKAR) have observed with dismay recent comments from the Vice President John Dramani Mahama. Indeed the Vice President was reported to have entreated the NDC to find ways and means of addressing Mr Rawlings’ concerns as his comments do not augur well for the party.

“It gives the impression of a party that is not united and solid and often that can affect your chances electorally. So it is an issue that the party needs to confront and deal with. He has some grievances and if I pick some of the issues that he normally raises, one is about justice, you can’t just pick people and put them in jail, you need to go through a process to prove their guilt”.

He continued further by stating that President Mills was voted into power by Ghanaians and as such is a president of Ghana and not an NDC president!

FONKAR have carefully studied the content of the interview John Mahama granted Radio Ghana and we are convinced that such a statement could only be part of that grand scheme orchestrated by certain elements within the Presidency to cause dissatisfaction for Mr Rawlings with the hope of taking over the power base of the NDC.

FONKAR is wondering what John Mahama meant by “You can’t just pick people and put them in jail, you need to go through a process to prove their guilt”.

Has Mr. Rawlings stated that government should pick people and put them in Jail? Who said justice should not take its course? And again, who said the wrongs of the past should not be investigated?

Who doesn’t know that, the re-election of the NDC to power in 2009 was as a result of the people’s believe in the NDC as having the capability to clean the rot that had engulfed the social fabric of the country, after the NPP had virtually taken the country as its private property and dissipated our natural resources in a wanton abuse of power that virtually brought Ghana’s economy on it’s knees? Do we need a rocket scientist to tell us that former government functionaries ought to account for their stewardship? So what is wrong if Dr. Rawlings calls for accountability?

If the likes of John Mahama are happy that the current government has dithered in investigating and prosecuting the fraud perpetrated by the Kufuor’s government, some of us are not and he should not fool himself into believing that the better Ghana that was promised is being delivered.

Did the manifesto for better Ghana not promised social justice and punishment for economic and political crimes? So what is John Mahama talking about? Our questions are endless and we need unscripted answers from the vice president.

And again, what was the Vice President thinking when he said that President Mills was voted into power by Ghanaians and as such is a president of Ghana and not an NDC president? Who said President Mills is an NDC President?

Which party’s mandate brought President Mills and John Mahama to power? Was it an independent ticket or the NDC? We seriously wonder if John Mahama and his boss are really running this country or a bunch of sycophants who have their ears are the ones ruling Ghana. What has the pair done to protect the principles and ideals of the NDC? Instead of protecting the ideals on which the NDC was founded they have rather encouraged their trusted median contacts to run down the ideals, principles and idiosyncrasies of the party. How can you be a Christian and not be Christ like? How possible can somebody claim to be an NDC and not believes in the principles and ideals that gave birth to the party? Where was John Mahama’s conscience when he made this bizarre remark?

How many times are we going to allow ourselves to be victimized by the unbridled folly and reckless remarks of our experimental politicians? John Mahama, and many who think like him, has conveniently forgotten the machinery that won them their elections. As an elected official of a political party, you are sworn to uphold the ideals, philosophies and idiosyncrasies of the party you serve. You have been elected to serve the interests of the party and a mandate to further the goals of the party.

Why is it acceptable for Mills and his cronies, to treat Jerry Rawlings as a fugitive in his own party, yet see the scrutiny of John Mills as a taboo?

When Prof. Mills went away to Canada to teach, President Rawlings kept the NDC alive with endurance. When people like Kofi Totobi Kwakyi was ‘ill’ in all eight years, and Kwamena Ahwoi ‘retired’ from politics during opposition time, and Kwesi Ahwoi went to work abroad, it was President Rawlings who held the fort. 

John Mahama had time to concentrate on African Union matters during the same period when the NDC needed to be sustained. It is also declassified information that John Mahama and Haruna Iddrisu got compromised by Francis Poku with cash inducements which made them burry their conscience and truth when they were supposed to be defending their avowed principles of the NDC. But today, all these people think former President Rawlings should not have a say in NDC matters. How more interesting can it get?

We are amazed at the level of extreme obsession by people in government to run down the Rawlingses and will not sit by and allow “strangers” in the NDC to destroy what has been built for well over 19 years.

FONKAR deems John Mahama’s comments as very reprehensible and injurious to Mr. Rawlings and we wish to denounce this carefully planned and projected agenda to obliterate the former President and to send a warning that such intrigue will not work for their benefit today or ever. We also wish to caution President Mills to be wary of these intrigues and their dire consequences for his presidency. And we in the FONKAR are ready to defend the legacy of Jerry Rawlings - the legacy they want to either usurp or destroy - even if it will cost us our lives.
